To find out more about the characteristics of women who give birth “secretly” in France, INED conducted a survey from July 2007 to July 2009 in which CNAOP correspondents at the département level filled out a questionnaire on birthmothers that included any information they may have left in the child’s file, along with answers to specific questions on the birthmother’s family and social situation and on constraints and choices made during pregnancy, at the time of delivery, and in the two months following the birth. Catherine Villeneuve-Gokalp presents the initial findings of this representative national survey.
